Envelope Printing

Envelopes are rinted on sheetfed presses. These are individually printed and not part of any group runs. Envelopes include bleed on 3 sides and are printed as illustrated in our example.

Turnaround Time

Normal turnaround time is approximately 4 business days after proof approval. Specialty stocks, large solids, will take longer.

Paper Options

Our standard stock is 24lb bond white wove.

Ink Choices

Colour printing prices are for CMYK.
Inks are translucent and paper colour affects the way the color will look. All Pantones will be converted to CMYK. We do not provide any colour matching for Pantones.

Bleeds

2 or 3 sided bleeds are permitted, but there may be an extra cost for heavy coverage.
Full bleeds (4 sided bleeds) are NOT standard.
We cannot print an entire envelope in a colour. We cannot bleed on the flap of an envelope (flap printing is an additional charge and you'll need to request a quote online).

Heavy Coverage or Large Solids

If your design includes heavy ink coverage and/or large solids, there may be an additional charge. Our prepress department will notify you if there is an additional charge. Heavy coverage or large solids may produce a light layer of ink that rubs off the front onto the back of the next envelope as it comes out of the press. This is called offset and is very common on envelopes. Some offset can be avoided by lightening large solids using a tint or screen of the color so that less ink is applied (click to see example).

Envelope seams and print quality

Another factor affecting quality are the multi-layers of overlapping seams that double and triple paper thicknesses. Since envelopes, like sheets of paper, must pass through printing and impression cylinders, special make-ready techniques are needed to compensate for these varying paper thicknesses. Choosing an envelope with seams that do not underlie printing areas (especially solids and tints) will often assure better print quality.

Minimum converting quantities

Envelope conversions usually require minimum runs of 5,000 pieces to be practical. However, you can have as little as 500 envelopes converted, but the unit cost will be high, since final gluing and finishing is frequently done manually.
